GridCraft vs Excel: where the free alternative fits
GridCraft brings an Excel-style workflow to an open-source editor. Here is what to know before moving a workbook.
This guide describes the unmodified GridCraft v0.7.0 browser build hosted by ZeninData. It is not a complete feature audit of every desktop release.
| Workflow | GridCraft on ZeninData | Microsoft Excel |
|---|---|---|
| Cost and account | Free editor; no account required here. | Depends on Microsoft’s edition and plan. |
| XLSX files | Native format, with evolving compatibility. Check complex workbooks. | Original application for the format; broad feature support. |
| Formulas and charts | Broad formula support, charts and PivotTables; some differences remain. | More mature function, chart and analysis workflows. |
| VBA and Power Query | VBA macros do not run; no equivalent full Power Query workflow. | Available in supported editions and environments. |
| Saving | Download a file. Do not rely on browser autosave. | Local and cloud saving options depend on the edition. |
| Collaboration | No shared cloud workbook service on this site. | Collaboration is available in supported Microsoft 365 workflows. |
Good first uses
Explore a CSV export, make a small table, try a formula or prepare a simple chart. Use a copy of the file and verify the result.
Where to keep using Excel
Workbooks with macros, complex enterprise features, critical calculations or strict file fidelity requirements need a mature, tested workflow. GridCraft’s own developers describe it as alpha software.
About ArtCraft Excel searches
Some users call the project “ArtCraft Excel.” The actual application is GridCraft, developed by the ArtCraft team. It is independent of Microsoft. ZeninData is an independent host, not the upstream developer.
